Former presidential candidate Peter Obi and Dr Moses Paul, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) chairmanship candidate for Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), have raised alarm over the deteriorating state of public education infrastructure following a visit to LEA Nursery and Primary School in Kapwa, a rural community on the outskirts of Abuja.
The visit, which took place on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, was prompted by a call from Dr Paul, who informed Obi of the schoolโs dire condition during his ongoing community outreach ahead of the February 2026 local council elections.
Obi, who was in Anambra State at the time, agreed to join the inspection. โWhat we saw was not conducive to learning,โ he said. โThe school lacked chairs for teachers, had no toilet facilities for pupils, and classroom furniture was in a completely dilapidated state.โ
The school, which serves over 200 children, has become emblematic of the broader challenges facing Nigeriaโs basic education sector. Obi described the conditions as โdeeply troublingโ and pledged personal support to help rehabilitate the facility.
โEducation remains the bedrock of every progressive society,โ Obi stated. โThe most important investment any nation can make is in its children. When we invest in basic education, we invest in the foundation of our national development and collective future.โ
He commended Dr Paul for his grassroots engagement and commitment to community development. โThat is what leadership should beโpresence, empathy, and responsibility,โ Obi said. โDr Moses Paul is demonstrating that same spirit.โ
The visit follows an earlier joint inspection by the two leaders to Tungan Nasara LEA Primary School in Abuja, as part of a broader initiative to spotlight neglected public infrastructure and advocate for urgent government intervention.
