Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has paid tribute to Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, whose death marks what he described as “the end of an era” in East African politics.
In a condolence message released on Wednesday, Atiku described Odinga—fondly known as “Baba”—as a towering figure in Kenya’s democratic evolution and a resilient advocate for electoral justice. “He played a leading role in the country’s democratic struggle, culminating in his being dubbed the country’s ‘father of democracy,’” Atiku said.
Odinga’s political journey, Atiku noted, was rooted in Kenya’s pre-independence era and defined by his unwavering belief in the ballot as a tool for change. “I admire his dogged belief in the power of the ballot, notwithstanding the several setbacks he had in his political journey,” he added.
Offering condolences to the Odinga family, the government, and the people of Kenya, Atiku expressed hope that the late statesman’s legacy would continue to inspire democratic movements across Africa. “I pray that his soul will find eternal rest in peace,” he said.
Odinga’s passing has prompted tributes from leaders across the continent, many of whom credit him with shaping Kenya’s modern political landscape and championing reforms that expanded civil liberties and electoral transparency.
