Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticized the federal government over reports that members of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, are being owed allowances despite their consistent efforts to represent the country with pride and dedication.
In a strongly worded statement, Obi described the situation as “truly unfortunate,” noting that while funds are often available for lavish political spending and patronage, those who serve the nation through sport are neglected. “We always seem to find money to waste on needless lavish spending and political patronage, yet we cannot pay those who patriotically raise our flag, bring us pride, and serve with dedication,” he said, lamenting what he called the reality of a “now disgraced country.”
Obi warned that such treatment of national representatives sends a damaging message to young Nigerians—that hard work and service to the country are not rewarded. He emphasized that athletes who wear the national colours deserve prompt payment and respectful treatment, not bureaucratic delays or disregard.
“When those who serve their country are not treated with dignity, it sends the wrong message to our youth,” he stated. “Those who represent Nigeria deserve to be paid promptly and treated with respect.”
