On Wednesday, Kenyan police arrested a man caught carrying the mutilated remains of his wife in a backpack, marking another distressing instance of gender-based violence in the country.

This incident comes just weeks after hundreds of women were tear-gassed while rallying in Nairobi to protest femicide and demand government action.

A murder investigation has been launched after John Kiama Wambua, 29, was apprehended by Nairobi police around 5:00 am (0200 GMT) during a routine patrol that led to the discovery of his wife’s remains.

Officers suspected Wambua of carrying illegal goods, but “to their shock discovered part of a mutilated human body,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations stated on X.

Wambua appeared “unperturbed” when confronted, telling police that the remains belonged to his 19-year-old wife, Joy Fridah Munani.

He later led authorities to the couple’s home, where officers found a gruesome crime scene, including a blood-soaked floor, stained clothes, and the murder weapon—a sharp knife.

Additional body parts were discovered under a bed, though authorities noted that “some body parts were still missing.”

In November, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights reported 97 murders of women in just three months.

Cases of domestic violence frequently capture headlines in Kenya, with activists consistently raising alarms about the increasing instances of femicide.

Last year, the nation was left in shock by the murder of Ugandan Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei, who was set on fire in Kenya by her boyfriend. Her death followed those of other women athletes, including Agnes Tirop and Damaris Mutua, who also lost their lives to domestic abuse.
