A yet to be identified gang of armed robbers has killed a security guard, popularly known as Mr Jerry, and injured two others at a filling station close to the Delta State Police Commissionerโs quarter in Asaba.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Adeyinka Adeleke, who confirmed the incident on Tuesday, said, โIt is true; I heard it this morning. The man who was killed was a security guard at the filling station. He was tied up and later died.โ
Adeleke added that over N1m was stolen from the filling station, while the another lost over N200,000 to the hoodlums, noting that no arrest had been made so far.
It was gathered that the armed robbers, who stormed the B2 Energy and Verun filling stations along the Okwe Road, on Monday, broke the strong rooms of the two filling stations and carted away millions of naira.
One of the fuel attendants at the stations, who spoke with newsmen on condition of anonymity, said, โWhen we came to work in the morning, we saw the security guard, Mr Jerry, dead and tied with a rope and his face was covered with a bag kept in the toilet. So, we raised the alarm.
โAt the same time, our neighbour at the other station started shouting after he discovered that two Hausa security guards were also tied with ropes but their faces were not covered.
โThe robbers broke our strong room and we were also told that the other station was broken into also, and they took the proceeds of the weekend sales.โ
It was also learnt that the two guards at the Verun filling station were receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital as the hoodlums allegedly removed their teeth.
A resident of the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the hoodlums silently robbed the two filling stations without shooting so as not to attract the attention of the security men at the CPโs quarter.
โWe were surprised to wake up this morning to find out that two filling stations were robbed and somebody was killed. We did not hear any sound of gun, because if they had shot, it would have attracted the attention of security personnel,โ he said.
