The All Progressives Congress (APC) won all the 27 Chairmanship seats and 636 of the 645 councillorship seats in last Saturday’s local government elections in Imo State.

Fourteen political parties participated in the election.

Accord Party, the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Kowa Party and the Rebuild Nigeria Party (RNP) won one councillorship seats each.

Elections were inconclusive in five wards.

Chairman of the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) Ethelbert Ibebuchi, who announced the results, said: “Our sensitisation and mobilisation efforts were sustained sequel to issuance of the mandatory 90 days notice of elections. We consulted stakeholders within and outside the state, and these efforts contributed to our success story”.

Chairman of APC Daniel Nwafor hailed the exercise as a reflection of the people’s mandate. He attributed the party’s success to its high level of preparedness, saying “before the election, the APC embarked on a sensitisation and awareness tour of the 27 councils and this has paid off. The result of the election also confirms the acceptability level of the APC”.

Governor Rochas Okorocha also hailed ISIEC for the successful conduct of the election.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, said the commission has shown that it has the capacity to conduct credible elections.
