The Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Moji Adeyeye, has debunked rumors suggesting that the agency has warned Nigerians against consuming bread.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Adeyeye dismissed as false a circulating video on social media that alleges NAFDAC raised concerns about the safety of bread in Nigeria.

“The video claiming that NAFDAC has advised Nigerians to avoid bread due to the use of saccharine by some producers does not accurately reflect the agency’s observations during the stakeholders’ engagement on August 16, 2024, in Ibadan, Oyo State,” Adeyeye clarified.

She further explained that the use of saccharine in bread is not approved under the Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS) or the Codex General Standard for Food Additives (GSFA).

“Any baker found using unapproved additives such as saccharine will face sanctions according to the existing regulatory provisions,” Adeyeye warned.

She emphasized that at no time did NAFDAC issue any advisory for Nigerians to avoid bread produced in the country.

“We strongly distance ourselves from the misleading statements in the video and reassure the public that NAFDAC remains fully committed to its mandate of safeguarding the health of the nation,” the statement concluded.
