England coach Eddie Jones was physically and verbally abused on the train as he travelled home from Scotland after his teamโs Six Nations defeat, the BBC reported on Wednesday.
The Australian, who was in a standard class carriage from Edinburgh to Manchester the morning after Englandโs 25-13 loss to the Scots at Murrayfield on Saturday, said he would not use public transport again.
โIโll make sure I wonโt in future. Itโs as simple as that,โ Jones told the BBC.
โIโm a human being. I donโt consider myself any different from anyone else, so for me to travel on public transport I thought was okay,โ Jones said.
โI canโt because it was shown what happens when I do. Thatโs the world we live in. I was massively surprised. It wasnโt comfortable.โ
Former Scotland captain Gavin Hastings had said supporters of Englandโs opponents want to โrub his face in the dirtโ and the former Australia and Japan coach questioned those comments.
โIt magnifies that if youโre in a position of responsibility youโve got to be careful what you say,โ Jones said.
โBecause if you talk about hate and you talk about rubbing peoplesโ nose in the dirt and all those sorts of things, it incites certain behaviours and are they the sorts of behaviours that we want to see?โ
Jones, who has led England to 24 victories in 26 games in charge, attended Manchester Unitedโs Premier League game against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday before travelling back to London.
โItโs part of the challenge. As an Australian coaching England, there were always going to be challenges and thatโs just one of them,โ Jones said.
