A Turkish Cypriot man, permanent resident of Limassol was arrested on Friday evening in Paphos while attempting to export wild birds.
The 34-year-old was caught at the airport at 7.45pm while getting ready to board with eleven small live wild birds, known as ‘sgarnilia’ in Greek, which are protected and possession of which is illegal.
The game service was immediately notified.
The 34-year-old, who is believed to have been trying to export the birds in order to sell them, was arrested and held for the illegal possession and keeping wild birds in captivity.
On being questioned he made a number of contentions that are being investigated.
