People in Germany, are calling on the health ministry to recall Kinder
chocolate bars after a recent test revealed that they contain a possible
carcinogen.
A group called Foodwatch, found that the mineral oil aromatic
hydrocarbons, which is a byproduct of petroleum, finds its way into
products for sale in supermarkets.
After testing 20 products ranging from chips to chocolate bars,
Foodwatch found that three contained dangerous levels of the mineral oil
aromatic hydrocarbons.
In addition to the Kinder chocolate bars, the carcinogen was also found
in Ferrero Nougat Minis, and Sun Rice Classic Schoko Happen.
The European Food Safety Authority lists the mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons as likely carcinogenic and mutagenic.
The mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons are often transferred to food
through recycled paper that had once been printed with inks containing
oils and are not formally banned from being used in food packaging.
However, the Association of the German Confectionary Agency said that
there was no reason to recall the products as the amounts found by
Foodwatch could be consumed without concern.
