A man who claims to be a Professor of Statistics has been arrested by the National Universities Commission (NUC) while trying to set up a private University.

The ‘Professor’, identified as Ambi P.N, was at the NUC to as part of formalities required to set up his university, ‘Nigeria British University’, This Day reports.

The NUC suspected foul play when he began to make contradictory statement when his professorial claims were questioned by the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie.

Ambi claims he got his Professorship from the Obong University, Akwa Ibom State and studied at the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana up to PhD level.

He then went on to say he studied at the University of Ewe, Ghana.

As if that was not enough, the ‘Professor’ added that he is a staff of Covenant University, presently on sabbatical at Obong University where he initially said he got his Professorship.

The NUC has in recent times stepped up its war against the proliferation of fake Universities in the country.

In August, the regulatory body listed fifty-five illegal universities which it called ‘Degree Mills’ and a further eight being investigated.

Nigeria is plagued by fake tertiary institutions that offer illegal certifications on demand.
