The Anambra State University, Uli, has been renamed after late Biafran hero Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, nearly three years after his death.
A bill was passed by the Anambra House of Assembly on Thursday officially renaming the state owned institution Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University.
One of the legislators, Mr Tony Muonagor (APC Idemili North) said that the aim of renaming the institution was to immortalise the late Biafran leader.
The Chairman, House Committee on Education, Mrs Rita Maduagwu, revealed that the institutionโs name had been changed before from Anambra State University of Science and Technology.
Other lawmakers who spoke during plenary endorsed the decision.
It will be recalled that Ojukwu was until his illness and death the leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the ruling party in Anambra state.
This honour is coming just two months before the third anniversary of the former military governorโs death. Ojukwu died aged 78, on the 26th of November 2011, in the United Kingdom following a brief illness. He was buried on Friday, 2 March in a mausoleum built in his compound at Nnewi.
As an evidence of Ojukwu’s hero status, his body was carried around all five Eastern states, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra and Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city.
