Veteran manager Louis van Gaal has revealed he is now free of cancer and expressed his willingness to return to high-level football.
The 73-year-old, who disclosed his prostate cancer diagnosis three years ago while coaching the Netherlands national team, shared the positive update during an appearance on a Dutch television talk show.
“I’m no longer bothered by cancer,” Van Gaal confirmed. He underwent multiple surgeries two years ago, describing it as a difficult period, but his health has since improved. “It all worked out in the end. I have regular check-ups, and everything is going well. I’m getting fitter and fitter,” he added.
Since leaving his role with the Dutch national team after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Van Gaal has stayed away from coaching. However, he hinted at a potential return—but only for the right opportunity. While ruling out a comeback to club management, he admitted that coaching a top-tier national team could tempt him back into the dugout.
Currently, Van Gaal serves as a special advisor to Ajax, where he previously enjoyed great success as a manager. His illustrious career has also included spells at Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester United. With his health restored, football fans may yet see the charismatic coach back on the international stage.
