Lionel Messi has refuted claims that his absence from a match in Hong Kong two weeks ago, which sparked anger in China, was a political gesture. He clarified that the reason for his non-participation was due to an injury.

During Inter Miami’s pre-season tour match against a Hong Kong select XI on February 4, Messi remained on the bench despite the anticipation of fans who idolize him in China. The sellout crowd, disappointed by his absence, expressed their frustration by chanting “Refund!” and booing Messi and team co-owner David Beckham.

Some politicians viewed Messi’s absence as a snub to China, especially after he played for 30 minutes in a friendly match in Japan shortly afterward.

In a video posted on China’s Weibo social media platform, Messi addressed the speculation, emphasizing that his absence was not politically motivated. He stated that he always desires to play in every game and highlighted his positive relationship with China, citing various engagements he has had with the country.

Messi attributed his non-participation to an injury, specifically inflammation of an adductor muscle. He expressed gratitude to his fans and reassured them of his appreciation for their support.

While some fans showed understanding and support for Messi, others remained skeptical and critical, questioning his sincerity. Despite Messi’s previous success in playing friendlies in China, upcoming matches against Nigeria and Ivory Coast were canceled after his absence in Hong Kong.
