Marseille announced the departure of Italian coach Gennaro Gattuso on Tuesday, after just five months in charge. Former Ivory Coast coach Jean-Louis Gasset has been named as his replacement.
Gattuso’s exit followed his admission to club officials on Monday that he was unable to find solutions to revive Marseille’s fortunes. He described the team as having “hit rock bottom” after their 1-0 loss to Brest on Sunday, leaving them ninth in the French league.
Taking over from Gattuso, Gasset expressed his honor in joining the legendary club and looks forward to working with the team to prepare for upcoming matches.
Gasset, aged 70, previously served as an assistant to Laurent Blanc with France and Paris Saint-Germain. He has also coached teams like Montpellier, Saint-Etienne, and Bordeaux. However, he was dismissed as Ivory Coast coach last month following a 4-0 defeat by Equatorial Guinea during the Africa Cup of Nations.
Gattuso, aged 46, arrived at Marseille in September to replace Marcelino Garcia Toral. Despite winning only one game, against fifth-tier Thionville in the French Cup, Marseille has struggled in the league and failed to qualify for European competition next season. Their only bright spot has been a 2-2 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League play-offs.
