Prime Minister Keir Starmer held a call on Saturday evening with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, as the UK and EU continue to coordinate closely on foreign policy and post‑summit negotiations.
Downing Street said the conversation centred on ongoing international efforts to advance the US‑led peace plan aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine. Both leaders agreed the coming weeks represent a decisive moment for Ukraine’s future and reaffirmed that Europe would continue to support Kyiv “for as long as it takes” to secure a just and lasting peace.
Starmer and von der Leyen also reviewed progress on plans to mobilise frozen Russian sovereign assets, an issue that has gained momentum among Western allies in recent months.
The call then turned to the package of measures outlined at the UK‑EU summit in May. Both leaders welcomed the positive trajectory of the negotiations and expressed hope that further progress could be achieved before the end of the year.
