U.S. Representative Riley M. Moore has drawn attention to the humanitarian crisis in Nigeria’s Benue State, recounting harrowing testimonies from Christians displaced by violence and now living in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps.
Moore, who visited Benue, said he met with dozens of victims who described being driven from their homes and subjected to brutal attacks.
According to Moore, one woman told him she was forced to watch as her husband and five children were killed before she narrowly escaped with her unborn child. Another woman said her family was murdered in front of her and her baby was violently taken from her womb. A man recounted how his family was hacked to death while he was left permanently injured.
Moore cited figures indicating that more than 600,000 Christians are currently sheltering in IDP camps in Benue State alone.
“These Christians should be able to live in their ancestral homeland without fear,” Moore said, condemning what he described as “genocidal Fulani” violence.
His remarks add to growing international concern over sectarian violence in Nigeria, where clashes between armed groups and communities have displaced hundreds of thousands and raised fears of worsening instability in the region.
