Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has pledged to cover examination fees for inmates across correctional centres in Anambra State, ensuring they can participate in the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) exams.
Obi revealed that he was approached by representatives of the inmates, who delivered a letter outlining their urgent need for financial assistance. NECO had agreed to allow the inmates to sit for the exams provided their fees were paid within the stipulated timeframe. Without payment, they risked being barred from continuing beyond Monday.
According to figures presented, 148 inmates are registered for the exams: 50 in Awka, 36 in Onitsha, 25 in Nnewi, and 37 in Aguata. Each candidate is required to pay ₦30,050, with an additional ₦2,000 for logistics, bringing the total to ₦4,741,400. Obi confirmed he would write to the representatives on Monday, guaranteeing that the fees will be settled, and promised to work with friends and well-wishers to raise the funds.
Reflecting on his recent visit to California State University, Sacramento, Obi cited programs such as the Guidance Scholars Program and Project Rebound, which support foster children and rehabilitate formerly incarcerated individuals. He said these initiatives reinforced his belief in inclusive leadership that values every human life and provides second chances.
Obi stressed that correctional centres must serve as places of reformation, with education and skills acquisition at the core of their mission. “When individuals complete their terms, they must be equipped to contribute positively to themselves and to society. These young men deserve a real chance to turn their lives around,” he said.
