Benin Says Military Foils Coup Attempt

by Joseph Anthony

Benin’s Interior Minister, Alassane Seidou, has announced that the country’s military has successfully thwarted an attempted coup by what he described as “a small group of soldiers.”

Speaking on national television, Seidou said the situation is now fully under control and reassured citizens of the government’s grip on security. He urged the population to remain calm and return to their normal daily activities.

“The government urges the population to resume their normal activities,” Seidou stated, emphasizing that the actions of the group had been neutralized by loyal forces.

No further details were immediately provided regarding the identities of those involved, possible casualties, or whether arrests have been made. Authorities have not yet disclosed the motive behind the attempted takeover.

Benin, which has long been regarded as one of West Africa’s more stable democracies, has in recent years faced growing security pressures within the region amid a wave of military coups in neighboring countries.

Officials say further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
