Super Eagles Arrive in Uyo After Chaotic Travel Delay Raises Questions Over NFF Logistics

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have finally arrived in Uyo ahead of Tuesday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Benin Republic, following a troubling 24-hour travel delay that has once again spotlighted logistical shortcomings within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

According to a post on the NFF’s official X account, the team landed at Victor Attah International Airport at 8:05 a.m. local time on Sunday. The announcement attempted to strike an optimistic tone, stating, “Now to get one over Benin! Yes. We can.” However, the circumstances surrounding their arrival were far from reassuring.

The delay stemmed from a mid-air emergency involving the team’s chartered ValueJet aircraft, which reportedly suffered a cracked windscreen shortly after take-off from Luanda, Angola. The aircraft had been used earlier to transport part of the delegation to Polokwane, South Africa, and had made multiple refuelling stops in Luanda in recent weeks—raising concerns about the reliability and safety of the chosen carrier.

While the NFF praised the pilot’s handling of the emergency landing, critics have questioned why the same aircraft was repeatedly used despite its apparent vulnerabilities. The Federation’s statement offered little clarity on why contingency plans were not in place, nor did it address the broader issue of travel coordination for a national team competing on the global stage.

Plans were reportedly made for another aircraft to be dispatched from Lagos to retrieve the stranded delegation, but the lack of foresight and preparedness has drawn criticism from fans and analysts alike.

With the World Cup qualifiers underway, the incident underscores persistent concerns about the NFF’s operational competence and its ability to safeguard the welfare of players and staff. As the Super Eagles prepare to face Benin, many are asking whether the team’s off-pitch challenges will continue to undermine its on-pitch ambitions.
