Governor Alex Otti Denies Defection Rumors, Warns Against Election Manipulation in Abia

by Joseph Anthony

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has firmly dismissed speculation about a possible defection to another political party, declaring his unwavering commitment to the state and issuing a stern warning to those allegedly plotting to rig the 2027 governorship election.

Speaking during the October edition of his monthly media engagement, Alex Otti Speaks to Abians, held at the Government House in Umuahia, the governor addressed growing political tensions and recent comments from opposition figures. The session was streamed live via Channels Television.

โ€œIโ€™m not defecting to another political party,โ€ Otti stated. โ€œThose planning to manipulate the Abia State governorship election results in 2027 should first write their own will, because this is our state and we cannot be intimidated.โ€

His remarks came in response to statements attributed to Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who reportedly claimed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would take control of Abia in the next election cycle. Otti welcomed democratic competition but cautioned against any attempt to subvert the will of the people.

โ€œI do not object to anyone contesting for office,โ€ he said. โ€œBut those planning to rig should rethink their intentions. Abia people are ready to protect their mandate.โ€

Governor Otti emphasized that power ultimately belongs to God and the electorate, not to political actors seeking influence through manipulation. He also clarified that his warning was not a threat but a call for accountability and respect for democratic processes.

The governorโ€™s comments have sparked widespread reactions across the state, with supporters praising his resolve and critics questioning the tone of his message. As political alignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 elections, Ottiโ€™s declaration signals a firm stance against electoral malpractice and a reaffirmation of his leadership in Abia.
