The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has firmly denied reports circulating online that a Brigadier-General and other military officers have been detained over an alleged coup plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu.
The rumours, which gained traction earlier this week, suggested that the Presidential Guards Brigade had been placed on high alert following suspicions of subversive activity within the military ranks. However, the DHQ has dismissed the claims as โmalicious and unfounded,โ stating that no such detentions have occurred and that the reports are intended to sow unnecessary tension in the country.
In a statement issued by the Acting Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the military clarified that there was no emergency meeting involving President Tinubu, his Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Commander of the Guards Brigade, Colonel Adebisi Onasanya, as alleged by some media outlets.
โThe Defence Headquarters wishes to categorically state that the report is false and misleading. The Nigerian Armed Forces remain committed to the constitutional authority and democratic governance of the country,โ Gusau said.
The denial comes amid heightened political sensitivity and public concern over national security, particularly following recent incidents of unrest and rising tensions in various parts of the country.
Separately, the Nigeria Police Force has declared a British national wanted for allegedly orchestrating a plot to destabilize the Tinubu administration, further fueling speculation about foreign interference and internal threats.
While the DHQ has pledged to pursue legal redress against the sources of the false reports, it has also urged the public to rely on verified information and avoid spreading unsubstantiated claims that could undermine national stability.
