Trump Threatens 30% Tariffs on EU and Mexico as Trade Talks Stall

by Reuters News Service

President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 30% tariff on imports from Mexico and the European Union starting August 1, escalating his trade war after negotiations with the key U.S. allies failed to produce a comprehensive deal.

The move, outlined in letters posted on Truth Social, targets two of Americaโ€™s largest trading partners and follows similar threats against 23 other nations, including Canada, Japan, and Brazil, with proposed tariffs ranging from 20% to 50%.

In his letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Trump demanded the EU eliminate its tariffs on U.S. goods, framing it as a condition for any future agreement.

“The European Union will allow complete, open Market Access to the United States, with no Tariff being charged to us,” he wrote. Von der Leyen warned that the 30% duties would harm transatlantic supply chains and vowed to defend EU interests, including potential countermeasures.

Mexico, which surpassed China as the U.S.โ€™s top trade partner in 2023, faces the same tariff threat despite its cooperation on border security. Trump accused Mexican cartels of fueling the fentanyl crisis, though U.S. data shows far more seizures at the Mexican border than Canadaโ€™sโ€”yet Ottawa was hit with a higher 35% rate. Mexican officials had not immediately responded to the announcement.

The EU had hoped to secure a sweeping trade deal but now anticipates settling for an interim agreement amid internal divisions, with Germany pushing for a swift resolution and France resisting one-sided terms.

Meanwhile, Trumpโ€™s aggressive tariff strategy has already boosted U.S. customs revenue, which exceeded $100 billion this fiscal year. The August 1 deadline leaves targeted nations weeks to negotiate lower ratesโ€”or brace for a renewed trade battle.
