Saudi officials are locked in tense negotiations to prevent Cristiano Ronaldo from leaving the kingdom after the football icon hinted at an Al Nassr exit, a source close to the talks told AFP on Thursday.

High-Stakes Negotiations Underway
A Public Investment Fund (PIF) insider revealed that Saudi authorities are pushing to retain Ronaldo for another season, with a potential move to rivals Al Hilal—who will compete in the FIFA Club World Cup—or Al Ahli, the reigning Asian champions, on the table.

The 40-year-old Portuguese superstar fueled speculation by posting “This chapter is over” late Monday, just after Al Nassr finished third in the Saudi Pro League, extending their trophy drought.

Club World Cup Looms as Deciding Factor
With a special transfer window (June 1-10) opening for Club World Cup teams, FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed last week that discussions were ongoing about Ronaldo’s participation in the expanded U.S. tournament (June 14-July 13).

Ronaldo, who joined Al Nassr in 2022 after a turbulent Manchester United exit, sees his contract expire in June 2025. However, Saudi officials are desperate to extend his stay, crediting him with transforming the league’s global appeal.

Ronaldo’s Legacy in Saudi Football
“His presence has been pivotal in elevating the Saudi Pro League over the past two and a half years,” the PIF source said. “He paved the way for top-tier stars and emerging talents to join.”

Despite his age, Ronaldo remains a marketing juggernaut and on-field force, netting 35 league goals this season. Yet with no silverware and Al Nassr’s struggles, his future hangs in the balance.

What’s Next?

  • Option 1: Transfer to Al Hilal (Club World Cup bound)
  • Option 2: Switch to Al Ahli (Asian champions)
  • Option 3: Depart Saudi Arabia entirely

With the clock ticking, Saudi Arabia faces a make-or-break mission to keep its most high-profile football import.
