Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, the Administrator of Rivers State, has expressed confidence that the current political tensions in the state can be resolved amicably.
Speaking at the 58th anniversary celebration of Rivers Stateโs creation at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Ibas described the crisis as a political dispute rather than an irreparable conflict. He emphasized that negotiation remains the most viable path to resolution, pointing out that even the most prolonged and violent conflicts worldwide have ultimately been settled through dialogue.
The former Chief of Naval Staff noted that successful resolutions often require leaders to compromise for the collective good, even when differences persist. He lamented that the present situation in Rivers State falls short of the vision of its founding fathers and urged leaders to prioritize the peopleโs welfare over personal ambitions.
Ibas defended President Bola Tinubuโs imposition of a state of emergency, calling it a necessary measure to prevent chaos. He criticized some elders and religious leaders for fueling divisions rather than mediating peace and questioned the sudden outcry from commentators who remained silent while politicians exploited the crisis for personal gain.
Highlighting Rivers Stateโs economic significanceโsecond only to Lagos in output and contributing 40% of Nigeriaโs onshore oil productionโhe called for unity to safeguard its stability. Reflecting on his tenure, Ibas described his service as administrator as a profound honor and thanked the people for their support.
The event also featured calls for improved child welfare, including access to education, healthcare, and safety. In his opening remarks, Secretary to the State Government Professor Ibibia Worika stressed the importance of resilience and unity for progress.
A keynote lecture by Professor Godwin Okon, titled โRivers State Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow: The Quest for Lasting Peace and Sustainable Development,โ examined the stateโs achievements, challenges, and future prospects, urging citizens to work together for peace and growth.
