Ruben Amorim, the manager of Manchester United, has praised winger Alejandro Garnacho for transforming his attitude and performance after being dropped for the derby win against Manchester City in December.
Amorim made the surprising decision to exclude both Garnacho and Marcus Rashford from the squad for the 2-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium. While Rashford remains sidelined and has hinted at a desire to leave Old Trafford, Garnacho has responded positively, earning Amorim’s admiration with his improved work ethic and contributions on the pitch.
The 20-year-old Argentinian has silenced speculation about a potential transfer by delivering strong performances, including a crucial assist for Kobbie Mainoo’s goal in United’s 2-0 Europa League win over FCSB on Thursday. Amorim highlighted Garnacho’s turnaround, stating, “He changed right away since that game against City. The way he understands things and understands that I just want to help him, I just want to win games. He changed in everything — the approach when you talk with him, the way he recovers.”
Amorim has often used Garnacho as an impact substitute, a shift from his more regular starting role under former manager Erik ten Hag. The Portuguese coach revealed that he has been demanding with Garnacho to push him toward greater consistency, saying, “He understands that sometimes I’m a different coach, that I am demanding in my way and sometimes it’s hard. He understands that it is never in a bad way, it’s always for him, but I am a different person. All the merit goes to Garnacho. He is improving, and we want to continue to improve with him.”
Meanwhile, Rashford’s future at the club remains uncertain, with Amorim urging the England forward to raise his standards if he wants to regain his place in the team. In contrast, Garnacho has embraced the challenge and is thriving under Amorim’s guidance.
There has also been speculation about the future of Kobbie Mainoo, with reports suggesting the 19-year-old midfielder could be sold as United navigate financial regulations while aiming to strengthen the squad. However, Mainoo delivered a standout performance against FCSB, scoring a goal and providing an assist after being deployed in a more advanced midfield role. Amorim believes the change in position has benefited the young talent, stating, “I feel that he was happier to play. If they are happy, they play better. Simple as that.”
Amorim downplayed concerns about contract negotiations affecting Mainoo’s form, emphasizing that the teenager’s comfort in his role is key to his success. As United prepare to host Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday, Amorim will be hoping both Garnacho and Mainoo continue to shine as the club looks to build momentum in the second half of the season.
