New academic year begins in primary, secondary schools

The 2022-2023 academic year started today with the opening of schools affiliated to the Primary Education Department. Secondary schools will open tomorrow.

The bell for the first lesson of the new academic year rang in 127 schools, 111 public and 16 private schools affiliated to the Primary Education Department.

Minister of education Nazim Cavusoglu, Dr.Suat Gรผnsel visited the state primary school Iskele and addressed the students and teachers.

About 27 thousand students studying in schools affiliated to the general secondary education and vocational technical education offices will start the lesson tomorrow.

There are approximately 23 thousand secondary and high school students studying in 49 schools, 37 of which are public and 12 of which are private schools, affiliated to the general secondary education department.

There are approximately 4 thousand vocational high school students studying in 12 schools affiliated to the vocational technical education department and approximately 400 students studying at the Taner Akcan apprenticeship and adult education center.

There are approximately 5,800 teachers working in public and private schools across the TRNC.

According to the academic calendar, the second semester of the 2022-2023 academic year will open on Thursday, February 16, 2023, after the semester break to be held between February 1-15, 2023.

On Friday, June 16, 2023, the report card and non-completion documents will be distributed and the academic year will end.

The first step exam for admission to colleges (KGS-1) will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2023, and the second step exam (KGS-2) will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2023.

Bรผlent Ecevit Anatolian High School (BEAL) and 20 July Science High School placement exam will be held on Saturday, 24 June 2023.

Applications for preference to vocational high school programs of students who have completed the 8th grade will be made between June 26 and July 6, 2023.

On Friday, July 7, 2023, the 9th grade students of vocational high schools will be announced.

On the other hand, in line with the decisions taken by the Supreme Committee on Infectious Diseases, it will be mandatory for all school staff, students aged 6 and over to wear masks in classrooms and in all other closed areas of schools.

The decisions of the Communicable Diseases Supreme Committee entered into force upon the publication of the Official Gazette on September 4.

Among the committee decisions were the rules for the new academic year.

In this context, it is mandatory for students, teachers, drivers and supervisors to wear masks in classrooms and closed areas of schools, as well as on school buses.

The Communicable Diseases Committee recommended that students aged 4-6 wear masks in the classroom and indoors.

It was stated that the ventilation and disinfection rules of classrooms and all other closed areas in schools (teacher rooms, etc.) should be followed.

In the family, if the coronavirus is positive, the child will continue to school, except if the person is positive and the child is unvaccinated.

Also in the decisions, the isolation period for coronavirus positives has been reduced to 5 days.

At the end of the 5th day, people will be able to continue their daily lives by observing the mask rules.

The Ministry of Health will create a screening program and conduct random screening tests at schools.

Classroom teachers ask students about symptoms at class entrances, such as fever, cough, sore throat, etc. Students with symptoms will be sent for testing.

Training on hand cleaning will be given by the School Pandemic Boards. Water and soap encouragement training will be given and disinfection will be used when necessary.

Hand disinfectant should be placed in places deemed appropriate by the school administration (canteen, cafeteria, etc.), especially pre-school education institutions aged 5 and under will definitely use disinfection.
