Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele

The House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee on the Need to Review the Purchase, Use and Control of Arms, Ammunition and Related Hardware by Military, Paramilitary and Other Law Enforcement Agencies in Nigeria, has summoned the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele, and the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru.

The committee summoned the officials on Monday in Abuja, following their failure to honour an earlier invitation to answer questions in connection with the $1billion approved by the Federal Government for the procurement of arms to fight insurgency.

The money had been approved and released during the tenure of the immediate-past service chiefs.

Of late, there have been claims that the $1bn could not be traced.

The National Security Adviser, Maj.Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtd.), had also made mention of the fund in an interview he granted the British Broadcasting about two weeks ago.

The committee had resolved to investigate how the money was utilised.

It earlier invited Emefiele, the COAS, several other security agency heads and ministries to appear on Monday, March, 22.

But, Emefiele and the COAS, who were to lead in addressing the committee on Monday, did not show up.

The committee summoned them and gave them April 7 to appear unfailingly.
