Chairman Senate Committee on Army, Senator Ali Ndume, has said that his decision to stand as surety for Abdulrasheed Maina was premised on his duty to represent both the good, bad and ugly people of his constituency.

Ndume who disclosed this to reporters in Abuja said it took him six months to agree to the request.

Maina, a former chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), is presently being tried by the Federal Government over alleged fraud.

The Senator representing Borno South said it was a hard decision for him.

Ndume said: โ€œI took me over six months to agree to be his surety.

โ€œFirst the bail condition requires a serving Senator and I happen to be the one.

โ€œSecond, his health condition is deteriorating and needs special medical attention.

โ€œThird his offence is bailable and lastly I am not saying the court should discharge and acquit him. If he is guilty, he will be sentenced.

โ€œIt was a hard decision I had to make. I have a duty to represent the good, the bad and the ugly of Borno South.โ€
