Omo-Agege assures of protection of women’s interest, as Constitution Review gathers momentum

The Deputy President of the Senate and Chairman of the National Assembly Committee on Constitution Review, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has given assurance that the proposed amendment to the Constitution would pay greater attention to issues that infringe substantially on the rights of women.

The DSP gave the assurance while receiving the League of Women Voters of Nigeria who visited him to deliver a memorandum on the proposed alterations/amendments to the 1999 Constitution (as Amended).

While appreciating the League of Women Voters of Nigeria for their memorandum, Omo-Agege described their action as timely and apt. He informed the visitors that “the Constitution Review committee is already steaming for action”.

Earlier in her address, the National Secretary of the League of Women Voters, Pastor ( Mrs) Reginald Omo-Agege, reeled out the vision of the group to include becoming Nigeria’s leading network for women empowerment, leadership and achievement, driven by participatory democracy where every woman has the desire, right, knowledge and confidence to participate in societal growth. She said all proposals made in the memorandum are geared towards making the voice of women heard in the scheme of things.

On his part, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege thanked the women for their contributions to society, encouraging them to always speak with one voice.

He charged them to go a step further by sponsoring a bill to adequately capture their expectations on the proposed amendment.

The Delta-Central Senator, however, emphasised that while the Constitution Review Committee would work on issues towards boosting the lots of women, care would be taken not to infract on existing provisions in the Constitution as regards gender discrimination.

Highlight of the visit was the presentation of the memorandum by the group to the DSP.

Other National Officers of the group on the entourage were Dr. Aisha Lemu and Mrs. Mate Olori.
