The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, on Friday said that most of the stranded 1,000 Nigerians abroad had not been able to undergo coronavirus test, which is a precondition for their evacuation.
She also said the Federal Government was the weighing options on Nigerian students abroad who want to return home but cannot afford the high fares.
She however said the final decision on the fate of the stranded Nigerians would be taken by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, who is also a member of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19.
Dabiri was responding to enquiries from THE NATION against the backdrop of increasing demands for evacuation by Nigerians.
She said: โThe biggest challenge really is getting the corona test done before departure. While it can be done privately but for a fee in some countries (like the UK), it is virtually impossible in some countries like the USA.
โWhile some have been able to get tested, many others have not. Again, the Hon. Minister will take a final decision if the protocols as given by NCDC may change.โ
She pleaded for understanding from those affected and their relatives.
Dabiri added: โWe understand the anxiety of Nigerians who want to return home but we should also understand the anxiety of Nigerians at home who are worried about a spike in the numbers at home
โAffected mostly are not Nigerians living and working abroad, but Nigerians who travelled for one reason or the other and got caught up
But hopefully, all will reunite with their families soon.
โThe requirements are as guided and advised by NCDC protocol.โ
On the exorbitant air fares, she said the Federal Government was weighing the options on the cases involving students and other severe matters.
But she said the government had taken a position that evacuees will bear the cost of their return.
She said: โThe Minister of Foreign Affairs, also as member of the PTF, will fully be responsible for the final decision on the return of stranded Nigerians.
โNames have been compiled by NIDCOM as well as missions, awaiting the ministerโs directives on the next steps.
โLike I said, the buck stops on the ministerโs table. Once he gives the go ahead, all missions will comply while NIDCOM will support in coordination efforts.
โPassengers are expected to pay for their fares. Some cases of students who went for courses and other severe matters may be looked into.
โBut the directive from the Minister is for all passengers to pay their fares, just as has been the case with other countries.
โSome logistics will be handled by the Federal Government as directed by the Honourable Minister, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama.โ
