How suspected child traffickers bought two kids for N140,000 – Police

A man, Chukwunoso Happiness and his wife, Chukwunonso Blessing have been arrested for alleged child trafficking.

Police said the couple bought two kids – Joshua James, 6 and Samuel Gbawune, 3 for N140,000.

The duo was nabbed on Thursday around 10:30pm following a tip off.

Blessing, who lives 23 Masebinu Street, Igbede, Ojo was first arrested on Thursday night with the kids along Alaba International Market.

On interrogated, she told the police that she was taking the kids to Anambra State.

According to her, the boys were adopted by her 40-year-old husband, Happiness from a Motherless Baby home in Jos, Plateau State and brought to Lagos.

She said she was taking them to Onitsha to meet her husband.

Police on Friday arrested Happiness around 7am.

He was said to have confessed to the police that he bought the kids for N140,000 from Mama Oyoo in Jos Township.

A statement by the police spokesman, Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent (DCP), said information from a credible source, made detectives from Ojo Division led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Abdullah Malah, to arrest the couple.

Elkana said: “One Chukwunonso Blessing, 30 of 23 Masebinu Street, Igbede, Ojo was arrested. She was seen along Alaba International Market with two children namely Joshua James, 6 and Samuel Gbawune, 3, trying to board a vehicle to Onitsha, Anambra State. Upon questioning, she claimed that the boys were adopted by her husband, one Chukwunoso Happiness, 40, from a Motherless Baby home in Jos, Plateau State and brought to Lagos.

“That she was taking them to Onitsha to meet her husband. On Friday around 7am, the said husband was also arrested by the police. He confessed to have brought the kids at the sum of N140,000 from one Mama Oyoo of Jos township. The kids were recovered.”

The police spokesman said efforts are on to identify the kids’ parents and reunite them.

The Command, Elkana said, called on Motor Park operators, union members and well meaning Nigerians to keep an eye on passengers with kids that appear in suspicious manner.
