Kano State Government has awarded contracts worth N730 million for the construction of a 52-bed amenity ward at Muhammadu Buhari Specialist Hospital in the state capital.

The project, a one-storey building, will also consist of nursesโ€™ quarters, offices, a restaurant and restrooms, among other facilities.

Inspecting the project site, the state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, explained that the facility is meant to ensure maximum convenience for patients, especially for cancer patients from within and outside the state.

โ€œThe cancer centre and the adjoining amenity ward will be linked by a passageway as part of our broad vision to provide worldโ€“class treatment of cancer in Kano,โ€ the governor stated.

Ganduje explained that the project would be completed within the next four to five months and will enhance the status of the hospital, which has started setting the pace in terms of providing quality medical services.

โ€œI am happy to note that this hospital has conducted the first brain surgery to be conducted by any state-owned hospital in this part of the country. The hospital also conducted a successful but complicated spinal surgery on one patient and this is just the beginning,โ€ he stated.

Speaking on the cancer centre, Ganduje, who also inspected the site, stated that contract for the project has also been awarded, stressing that the work would commence next week.

The governor said the project was conceived when he visited โ€œthe Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Australia, one of the worldโ€™s leading cancer research, education and treatment centres.โ€
