The Bayelsa State Government on Tuesday demanded that the Independent National Electoral Commission should postpone the governorship election scheduled for November 2, 2019.
The government premised its demand on the fact that the day clashes with its yearly thanksgiving service which is backed by law.
The Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah (retd), made the plea when he led Bayelsa stakeholders on a courtesy visit to the chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu in Abuja on Tuesday.
The stateโs thanksgiving service, according to the Deputy Governor, has the backing of the law and had been on for the past seven years.
In his response, the INEC chairman said the Commission would meet to deliberate on the matter and get back to them.
He also announced the readiness of INEC to commence the prosecution of electoral offenders whose case files have already been prepared by the Nigerian Police.
