The night sky will hold a treat for moongazers on Friday, as the April full moon, known as the Pink Moon, will appear larger than usual.

Despite the name, the moon will not appear pink, but may appear orange or red due to dust, haze, smoke or ash in the atmosphere.

The moon is named pink after the colour of wild ground phlox, one of the early spring flowers that blossom in South America.

The Pink Moon was originally named by the Native Americans who named the moons in an attempt to keep track of their harvesting schedule.

While not pink, the moon is expected to look larger than normal as it is at the point in its orbit when it is closest to Earth.

Friday’s full moon phase will begin at 2.12pm local time, though the pink moon will only become visible for moongazers at the time of moonrise, expected at around 7.30pm.

The next full moon will be the Flower Moon on May 18.
