The Defence Headquarters has said it will arrest anyone who attempts to disrupt Saturday’s run-offs.
The acting Director, Defence Information, Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, who spoke with reporters in Abuja, said the military and police were working together to “guarantee a secure environment for Nigerians to exercise their civic rights.”
He said the authorities were disturbed by the violent incidents which marred the March 9 governorship and House of Assembly polls in some states.
Meanwhile the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Abayomi Olonisakin, has said the military is conducting no fewer than seven major operations nationwide to ensure peace in the country.
Olonisakin stated this in Abuja while receiving the United Kingdom’s Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Nicholas Carter, and his French counterpart, Gen Francois Lecointre, in Abuja on Friday.
Olonisakin said, “We have Operation Safe Haven in Plateau State, Delta Safe in Niger Delta, Whirl Stroke in Benue and Nasarawa, Sharan Daji in Zamfara and clearance operations in Kogi. These operations are yielding results and we will not relent until we rid our country of all criminal elements.”
The UK and France promised to help Nigeria tackle the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East.
Carter said ensuring peace in Nigeria was good for West Africa.
