Palpable tension took over the Professor Mahmood Yakubu Conference Hall where officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission are collating results of the governorship and State House of Assembly election in Bauchi.
The tension was caused by the cancellation of the results of Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area by the Returning Officer and Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology in Yola, Prof. Kyari Mohammed.
Tafawa Balewa LGA is the stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party and one of the three LGAs in the constituency of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.
Already, security agencies have arrested a yet-to-be-identified ally of a prominent politician over allegations that he was trying to cause trouble.
The Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Ali Janga, told journalists on Sunday at the venue of the collation centre that the suspect was apprehended over allegations that he was threatening the Collation Officer for Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area, Mrs. Dominion Anosike.
Anosike had said that armed hoodlums invaded the collation centre in the LGA where she was forced to announce the results.
According to her, there was violence in the collation centre and election results sheet carried away, adding that “police had to rescue us because our lives were at stake.”
