A former President of Liberia, Prof Amos Sawyer, has raised concerns over the use of social media in inciting violence during the forthcoming elections.
Sawyer, speaking at an ongoing one-day peace conference by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, tagged โPeaceful Elections and National Development,โ held at Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, commended former President Jonathan for his role in sustaining democracy in Nigeria.
The Liberian ex-president, who gave an opening remark, said the challenges that may persist in electoral process include the use of digital media.
He said, โSocial media poses significant challenges and increases the risk of incitement and conflict. It requires robust countermeasures by civil organisations and peace committee.
โThe role of the media, though sometimes annoying, is vital and should be protected.โ
