A former President of Liberia, Prof Amos Sawyer, has raised concerns over the use of social media in inciting violence during the forthcoming elections.

Sawyer, speaking at an ongoing one-day peace conference by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, tagged โ€˜Peaceful Elections and National Development,โ€™ held at Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, commended former President Jonathan for his role in sustaining democracy in Nigeria.

The Liberian ex-president, who gave an opening remark, said the challenges that may persist in electoral process include the use of digital media.

He said, โ€œSocial media poses significant challenges and increases the risk of incitement and conflict. It requires robust countermeasures by civil organisations and peace committee.

โ€œThe role of the media, though sometimes annoying, is vital and should be protected.โ€
