The Independent National Electoral Commission says it has yet to begin collation of results of presidential and National Assembly elections from some local government areas in Bayelsa, blaming the terrain of the state for the delay.
Head of Department, INEC Voter Education and Publicity, Mr Wilfred Ifogah, told journalists in Yenagoa on Sunday that the commission was also conducting supplementary polls in 39 units in Ogbia and Sagbama local government areas.
He said, “Yes, some results have started coming in but you know the terrain and even as I am talking now, elections are ongoing in some wards and units in different local government areas.
“The elections in those areas were rescheduled because of malfunctioning smart card readers and mix-up in some units.
“A total of 39 polling units were affected in Sagbama and Ogbia LGAs. Voting is ongoing today, February 24 and it will stop at 6pm,” he said.
Meanwhile, Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has accused military authorities of subverting the will of the people in the electoral process in the state.
The governor condemned alleged killings in the state and the hijacking of electoral materials in areas such as Bassambiri, Oluasiri, Agbere, Oweikorogha, Apoi, Azuzuama and Korokorosei.
Dickson expressed sadness over the shooting of Government House Photographer, Reginald Dei, and the killing of the Peoples Democratic Party ward chairman in Oweikorogha community, Mr Seidougha Taribi.
He offered his condolences to the families of the victims, saying his administration would set up a commission of inquiry to investigate political killings and other offences committed during the 2019 general elections.
