England manager Gareth Southgate is encouraging football fans to “be a part” of Euro 2020 by applying to be a volunteer at the tournament, which starts in 500 days.

London’s Wembley Stadium is hosting seven fixtures during the tournament, with the 44 remaining games spread evenly between 11 other venues around Europe, including Dublin’s Aviva Stadium and Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

The official UEFA Euro 2020 volunteer scheme will give approximately 1,300 people a chance to help deliver Wembley’s seven games, which include the two semi-finals and the final, while Mayor of London Sadiq Khan is recruiting a further 2,000 volunteers to welcome fans at the city’s fanzones and transport hubs.

In a statement, Southgate said: “There is nothing quite like the excitement and electricity that hosting games at a major international tournament can bring. To have that buzz around Wembley, London and the nation again will be extremely special.

“Hopefully, as a team we will be able to play our own role in Euro 2020, but I would encourage anyone with an interest in the tournament to consider applying to be a volunteer.

“You will be part of that incredible atmosphere and will play an invaluable role in welcoming fans to London and Wembley – it promises to be a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Applications for both programmes will open in June 2019 but prospective volunteers are now invited to register their interest and to be kept up to date with news via TheFA.com/Euro2020Volunteer.

Khan said: “London is the world’s greatest sporting city and we’re proud to be hosting seven matches, including the final, right here in the capital.

“Football has the power to bring people from all walks of life together and this is a fantastic opportunity for Londoners to get involved and help make Euro 2020 the best tournament ever.”

The tournament, which starts at Rome’s Olympic Stadium on June 12, is being spread across 12 European cities to celebrate its 60th anniversary.
