Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has said primary school enrolment has risen to over four million in the last three years following the government’s interventions and public enlightenment.
Ganduje said the 4,084,965 pupils in the state comprise of 3,695,402 at pre-primary and primary and while 389,293 in junior secondary schools, as contained in a recent Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) audit conducted nationwide.
A statement by the governor’s media aide, Ameen Yassar, said the figure does not include Senior Secondary Schools, science and technical colleges, two state-owned universities, other tertiary institutions and monotechnics.
The governor, however, said the astronomical increase in enrolment has become a serious impediment to the attainment of his administration’s education policy objectives.
He spoke at the closing of a one-week special training for 500 Mathematics, Science and ICT teachers from the State Science and Technical Schools Board at the National Teachers’ Institute, Kaduna.
According to Ganduje, his administration would continue to invest in the sector, particularly in infrastructure development, provision of teaching materials and capacity building.
The governor promised that his government would sustain its commitment towards “qualitative teachers with desired skills through training and retraining, making the environment conducive for learning and providing the right tools and materials for effective teaching and learning”.
