Delayed allowances due to budget crisis, say police

The Police yesterday attributed the non-payment of allowances to some  personnel to delay in the approval of the 2018 budget.

Some riot policemen took to the streets of Maiduguri, Borno State, on Monday to demand for the payment of their over five monthsโ€™ allowances.

The police, however, said the personnel did not protest, but only embarked on an enquiry mission.

Speaking in Abuja yesterday, the Force spokesman, Acting DCP Jimoh Moshood said the personnel were only owed allowances and not salary as reported.

He said: โ€œThe issue has been extensively dealt with. We issued a press release on Monday and we stick to it.

โ€œThe payment was delayed because of the delay in the passage of the budget. Since the budget has been approved now, the IGP has directed that the  payment should be expeditiously processed and payment would  be done promptly.

โ€œWe equally want to let you know that the IG has directed the Commissioner of Police in charge of Police Mobile Force to proceed to Maiduguri to ensure that these personnel that went on enquiry are educated and properly informed of the reason why the allowances were delayed.

โ€œThe issue that made them to go on enquiry is in respect of the special duty allowance and not salary.  The entire emoluments of the personnel of the Force, which contains salary and other allowances, are being paid as at when due.

โ€œA lot is being done in this regard to ensure that personnel of the Force get their payment promptly.โ€
