Avram Grant has quit as Ghana manager after being eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations at the semi-final stage.
The former Chelsea boss spent more than two years in charge of the West African side but decided not to renew his contract after his side’s surprise elimination at the hands of eventual AFCON winners Cameroon in Gabon.
Grant, who took over from Kwesi Appiah in November 2014, tasted defeat in to Ivory Coast in the AFCON final two years ago before finishing runners up this time around.
Speaking to the BBC, Grant said he had told Ghana FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi: “The time is right for me to move on to a new challenge”.
Grant added: “I’ve hugely enjoyed my time in Ghana taking over after the disastrous 2014 World Cup campaign and rebuilding the squad to reach the final in the African Cup of Nations for only the second time in 23 years, and also the semi-final of this year’s competition.
“And the passion and loyalty of the supporters is something I’ll always remember.”
he pressing concern for Grant’s successor is World Cup qualification, with Ghana currently in third place in qualifying Group E after a draw and a defeat in their opening two games of the campaign towards the end of last year.
A statement by the Ghana FA read: “The two parties will mutually part ways after their contract ends on February 28”.
“Both parties have mutually agreed not to renew the contract upon its expiry,”
