A police officer was rushed to a hospital with a gunshot wound after shooting himself while trying to shoo away an attacking raccoon, according to police in Washington DC.
Police said that the incident unfolded on Thursday, while the police officer was on duty.
As the officer, who was not identified, walked on Horse Stable Lane, the raccoon attacked him. The officer tried to shoo away the animal, but he accidentally discharged his weapon and shot himself in the foot.
Paramedics were called around 12:00 p.m., and the officer was taken to a nearby hospital. The officer was treated for a non-life threatening injury.
Another police officer arrived at the scene and shot the raccoon. Animal control officers came to the scene, and removed the raccoon.
