A man was arrested on a charge of escaping custody after allegedly running away from police while officers tried to arrest him, according to police in New Zealand.

Mosgiel police said that they used a police dog on Sunday night, to tackle the 29-year-old man, who was not identified, but instead of running after the criminal, the animal bit an officerโ€™s leg.

The dogโ€™s handler immediately jumped in to help and ordered the dog to release the officerโ€™s leg. The suspect was then detained.

The officer was taken to the Dunedin Hospital, where he was treated and released. Police said that this was not the first time that the dog bit an officer, and probably not the last.

The injured officer said that he tried to execute an arrest warrant and handcuffed the suspect. As they began walking back to the police cruiser, the suspect ran away.

The officer called for the police dog to be used to catch the suspect, but instead of tackling the 29-year-old man, the animal attacked him.
