A Chicago church where NBA star Dwyane Wade’s mother serves as pastor will host a special Sunday prayer service after her niece was shot to death while pushing a stroller.
Mourners will gather at the New Creation Church to remember murder victim Nykea Aldridge killed by bullets intended for somebody else as she walked Friday with her baby.
The 32-year-old mother of four was fatally wounded when two men started blasting indiscriminately at a third man near a Chicago elementary school, police said.
No arrests were made in the killing that drew national attention. Police were questioning witnesses as the investigation continued.
Pastor Jolinda Wade, the mother of the newly-signed Chicago Bulls star Dwyane, serves as senior pastor at the church. She was with other family members, including her sister, at Stroger Hospital after the fatal shooting.
Jolinda Wade and her son had appeared one night earlier on an ESPN Town Hall meeting to discuss the violence in Chicago.
“RIP Nykea Aldridge… #EnoughIsEnough,” Wade tweeted Saturday. Wade, a Chicago native, sent a similar tweet several hours after the Friday shooting.
Aldridge was walking down the street around 3:30 p.m. when the gunfire started. She was struck in the head and the arm while headed to the Dulles School of Excellence to register her children for classes.
It wasn’t the first brush with gun violence for the Wade family. Dwyane Wade’s nephew Darin Johnson survived after taking two bullets in the leg in March 2012.
