The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has condemned the actions of religious leaders, describing them as “egocentric and no longer promoting religious values”.

He called for peaceful coexistence between Muslims and Christians for sustainable growth.

The monarch spoke during the signing of a peace agreement between Christian and Muslim leaders, which was witnessed by officials of the United Nations (UN) and the United States of America (USA).

The agreement is to affirm that Christians/Muslims  and North/South shall maintain peace and harmony as 2019 approaches.

Sultan Abubakar, who co-chairs the Nigeria Interfaith Action Association (NIFAA), said all must ensure democratic sustainability.

The monarch, who was represented by the Emir of Keffi, Dr. Shehu Usman Yamusa III, said: “I thank NIFAA for being resilient in the cause for peace in Nigeria, as well as keeping to faith principles of the UN General Assembly on International Day of Peace, which encourages countries to live together as a people and as a nation.

“The unique declaration is timely, since it is noted that most religious leaders no longer promote religious values, but are egocentric conflict entrepreneurs.

“Religious leaders must disseminate the language of peace under our spiritual jurisdiction, and also note the law of Karma, where all must account for their deeds, now or latter. We must all ensure democratic sustainability, especially now that the 2019 election is near.”

National President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Supo Ayokunle, who was represented by Prelate of the Methodist Church, Dr Samuel Chukwuemeka Uche, noted that their anticipation for 2019 election and the Osun State governorship election is peace.

According to him, they desire peaceful elections for a stable Nigeria where there will be justice and the rule of law is obeyed.

U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria Stuart Symington said no one would be a Nigerian, if there is no peace.

He advised that when someone kills, he or she should be called a killer and not the other way round.
