Famagusta side Anorthosis said Tuesday it would appeal a decision by the football association to dock nine points after it fielded an ineligible player in a game the team won earlier this month.

The club said it will also ask the CFA to postpone the last matchday of the regular season pending the appeal.

The CFA on Monday docked nine points from Anorthosis after it upheld an appeal by Apollonas, which had disputed the eligibility of the Famagusta teamโ€™s newly-signed goalkeeper Francis Uzoho in a game between the two sides on February 2.

Anorthosis, which had won the fixture 1-0, was docked the three points โ€“ now awarded to Apollonas โ€“ and an additional six for breaking the rules.

Apollonas disputed his eligibility and even reported possible forgery to the police.

The Limassol side said he had only arrived in Cyprus on Friday afternoon, shortly before 4pm, and questioned how he could have had his health card issued about an hour after KOAโ€™s offices closed on Friday at 2.30pm.

KOA cancelled the medical card on February 9, as reports suggested Uzoho had told police he was on the plane on his way to Cyprus when the card was issued. But KOA had failed to clarify whether the cancellation was retroactive, something it eventually did on Monday.

Police arrested three people in connection with the affair, including Anorthosisโ€™ deputy chairman and doctor Kyriacos Yiangou. The three were released, as police continue their investigation.

On Tuesday, it was announced Yiangou had resigned his post.
