Christian Norgaard admitted he had nearly given up on his childhood dream of playing in the Champions League before completing his transfer from Brentford to Arsenal on Thursday.
The 31-year-old Danish midfielder, who joined the Gunners for an initial £10 million fee with potential add-ons of £2 million, expressed his emotional reaction to securing a move to the Premier League giants.
Norgaard, a key figure in Brentford’s rise to top-flight stability over the past four seasons with 196 appearances and 13 goals, revealed his disbelief at the opportunity. “You can get almost emotional because maybe it was a dream that I’d given up on as I got older,” he said. “I’d just signed a new deal with Brentford, and while there was always a small chance of a miracle, Champions League football with them seemed unrealistic. Now, I’ll hear the anthem and be part of it—it’s incredible.”
The midfielder becomes Arsenal’s third signing of the summer after Martin Zubimendi and Kepa Arrizabalaga, filling a void left by the departures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho. Manager Mikel Arteta praised Norgaard’s leadership and experience, calling him a “strong, versatile midfielder with tactical intelligence” who will add depth to the squad.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are reportedly nearing a £70 million deal for Sporting Lisbon’s Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres, signaling further ambition ahead of their Champions League return.
