Newcastle have signed Anthony Gordon from struggling Everton on a long-term deal as Eddie Howe looks to continue their top-four push.

The former Toffees forward, 21, joins the Magpies for an undisclosed fee which is reported to be around ยฃ40 million.

He missed three days of training this week after growing unsettled at Goodison Park.

Gordon spoke to NUFC TV about the controversial transfer. He said:

“Since I heard of the interest, I was always convinced Newcastle were for me.

“I think the fan base and the city really suits me as a person, the way the team are playing under the gaffer at the minute really suits me, and the club just look like they’re heading in the right direction.

“I feel like it’s a really big step. People haven’t seen what I’m capable of yet. I think under the gaffer, and the way the club’s going, I can really excel here.”

And Magpies boss Howe swooped to bolster his options in the final third with his side holding a slender three-point advantage over fifth-placed Tottenham in the Champions League race.

Gordon joined Everton’s academy as an 11-year-old having been released by rivals Liverpool and made his first-team debut in 2017.

The England Under-21s international played 78 times for his hometown club, scoring seven times.

Gordon will be cup-tied when Toon welcome Southampton to St James’ Park on Tuesday for the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie holding a 1-0 advantage.

But he could make his debut when his new side host West Ham on February 4.
